Microcement is a thin, seamless coating applied over a prepared substrate and sealed with a topcoat, popular for its continuous, joint-free look.

Microcement's seamlessness is also its main risk: waterproofing depends entirely on correct substrate preparation and topcoat application, since there are no grout lines to compartmentalise a failure. A poorly installed microcement shower has fewer built-in safeguards than a poorly installed tile shower.

Where each performs better

Tile remains the more forgiving and widely tested choice for constantly wet zones like shower floors and enclosures, particularly for homeowners without a specifically experienced microcement installer available locally. Microcement performs well on bathroom walls, floors outside the direct wet zone, and vanity surrounds, where its continuous look is the main draw and water exposure is lighter.

Ask any microcement installer specifically about their sealed system's warranty and wet-zone suitability — quality and product systems vary significantly between suppliers, more so than with standardised tile installation.

Repair and long-term wear

Chipped tile can be replaced individually; damaged microcement typically requires resurfacing a larger area to blend the repair, since an exact colour and texture match on a small patch is difficult. Factor this into the decision if the household includes young children or pets likely to cause impact damage.
