Engineered quartz is roughly 90-95% ground quartz mineral bound with polyester resin — manufactured, not quarried. Natural stone (granite, marble, quartzite) is quarried and cut, with variation and imperfection that is inherent to geology rather than a manufacturing defect.
Engineered quartz is non-porous and does not require sealing, which is its central selling point against porous natural stones. Because engineered quartz contains a resin binder, it is more heat-sensitive than granite or quartzite — direct contact with hot pans can cause localised discolouration or cracking that natural stone would generally tolerate. Manufacturers explicitly recommend trivets and hot pads for engineered quartz, which surprises many buyers who associate "quartz" with the mineral's genuine heat resistance rather than the engineered product's resin content.
Granite and true quartzite tolerate direct heat exposure meaningfully better, though trivets remain good practice for any countertop material to avoid thermal shock cracking.
Look, cost, and consistency
Engineered quartz offers highly consistent colour and pattern across an entire kitchen, since it is manufactured to a formula — useful for large runs where slab-matching natural stone veining would be difficult or expensive. Natural stone offers unique, non-repeating variation that some buyers specifically want and others find harder to plan around for multi-slab kitchens.
Pricing between the two overlaps significantly depending on the specific natural stone and quartz product tier — neither is reliably cheaper than the other across the board.
